European Union governments are struggling to overcome obstacles to put a new asylum system in place three years after unveiling a plan to reform the bloc’s outdated asylum rules.
The Biden administration’s apparently unbothered approach to the global migration crisis is “unsustainable,” British Home Secretary Suella Braverman plans to argue in meetings with officials from the departments of Justice and Homeland Security this week.
“Illegal migration and the unprecedented mass movement of people across the globe is placing unsustainable pressures on America, the UK and Europe,” Braverman said in a statement before traveling to the US Monday evening.

“If we fail to meet these challenges, then our political institutions risk losing their democratic legitimacy,” she added.

We understand that husbands and fathers are more likely to make a dangerous journey to establish a place of safety for their family in a foreign country, but we need to check that all of these men are becoming an anchor for their families. The sheer numbers of men in their late teens-early twenties suggest this cannot possibly be the case.
News that these small boat illegal immigrants are being scrutinized and returned at a higher rate is optimistic. In 2021 just 28 people who illegally entered the UK via small boats crossing the channel were deported. According to the Home Office, 628 Channel chancers were sent home in just six months this year compared to 382 for the entire of 2022.
